La libertad de redescubrir
Mi cuñada Rebeca vino a visitarnos desde Fort Lauderdale y, mientras caminábamos alrededor de Lake Morton, me hizo una pregunta que se quedó en mi mente. “¿Alguna vez te detienes a admirar la belleza de Lakeland y de todo el Condado de Polk?”
La pregunta me hizo reflexionar. Después de tantos años viviendo aquí, comprendí que a veces estamos tan ocupados que olvidamos apreciar los tesoros que nos rodean.
Por eso nace esta edición.
Mientras los Estados Unidos celebra 250 años de historia, en ¡Viva Polk! queremos invitarle a redescubrir el Condado de Polk y sus 17 municipalidades. Desde sus lagos y jardines hasta sus centros históricos y negocios locales; cada comunidad tiene algo especial que ofrecer.
En estas páginas también reflexionamos sobre el significado de la libertad junto al Congresista Scott Franklin, quien comparte su visión sobre este importante aniversario nacional y sobre los valores que continúan definiendo a nuestro país.
Nuestra portada destaca a Jorge Córdova, “El Margariteño”, orgullo de Venezuela, quien ayudó a llevar a su país a la cima del béisbol mundial y encontró en Lakeland un lugar para desarrollar una extraordinaria carrera profesional.
También conoceremos la inspiradora historia del piloto cubano Oreste Lorenzo, cuyo amor por la libertad lo llevó a protagonizar una de las historias de valor más impactantes de nuestro tiempo.
Historias diferentes, pero con un común denominador: la oportunidad de soñar, perseverar y construir un futuro mejor.

The Freedom to Rediscover
My sister-in-law, Rebeca, came to visit us from Fort Lauderdale, and as we walked around Lake Morton, she asked me a simple question that has stayed with me. “Do you ever stop and admire the beauty of Lakeland and all of Polk County?”
Her question made me reflect. After living here for so many years, I realized that sometimes we become so busy that we forget to appreciate the treasures that surround us.
That is how this issue was born.
As the United States celebrates 250 years of history, ¡Viva Polk! invites you to rediscover Polk County and its 17 municipalities. From beautiful lakes and gardens to historic downtowns and local businesses, each community offers something unique and worth celebrating.
In these pages, we also reflect on the meaning of freedom with Congressman Scott Franklin, who shares his thoughts on this important national milestone and the values that continue to shape our country.
Our cover story features Jorge Córdova, “El Margariteño,” a proud Venezuelan who helped lead his country to a world baseball championship and found in Lakeland a place to build an extraordinary professional career.
We also share the inspiring story of Cuban pilot Oreste Lorenzo, whose love of freedom led him to become part of one of the most remarkable stories of courage in modern times.
Different journeys, but with a common thread: the opportunity to dream, persevere, and build a better future.
